Wishing You a Flappy New Year
Rovio would like to thank YOU, the fans, for your love and support throughout an amazing and eventful 2017. This year saw new games, robust content updates, and exciting initiatives outside of gaming, including efforts on our entertainment front. Rovio’s growth as a company in 2017 surpassed all of our expectations, and it was a year full of feathery fun.
In the beginning of the year, Rovio opened up its new game studio in London, which added to our already expanding teams around the world and hopes to tap into the talented pool of developers in the UK. The new studio was set up to focus on a different direction — one that will work on massively multiplayer online games and outside of the Angry Birds franchise. We can’t wait to show you what they have brewing.
Year 2017 we had three amazing game launches, including the naughty flock in Angry Birds Evolution, which also saw the first raisin’ introduction of Iron Maiden’s “Eddie the Bird” and the delightful and bubbly Angry Birds Match. Outside of games starring our favorite beaked friends, we launched Battle Bay, which is the Rovio’s first real-time, competitive multiplayer game, jampacked with action and heated sea skirmishes.
Angry Birds 2 celebrated its 2nd birthday in style with its massive clan update, which allowed friends to come together and compete for high scores and overcome challenges.
The Angry Birds Movie was a major spotlight for Rovio in 2016, and this year, a sequel was officially set for a 2019 release. Also, the lovable and chirpy buddies from Angry Birds Blues debuted its first season on YouTube with over 30 adorable episodes. And with all the great new content, Angry Birds YouTube channel has now over 2 million subscribers!
Away from the flock and on the business side, Rovio went public with an initial public offering (IPO) in September. The fruits of success was attributed to many years of successful games, animation, film and merchandise.
Sports also became a focus of the year as Rovio became an official sleeve sponsor to English Premier League football team Everton FC.
We have a lot of exciting and new content in store for you in 2018 that we can’t wait to show you!
For now, we wish you and your loved ones a Happy New Year and we’ll see you in 2018!
